Denture Care

For those who have had some or all of their teeth extracted, removable dentures are one way to replace the missing teeth. Bridges and implants are other alternatives. Dentures can be made in the form of full dentures that replace all of the upper or lower teeth or as partial dentures that often have a framework that that attaches to existing teeth and that supports the artificial teeth that replace the missing ones.

It is just as important to clean your denture(s) as it is to clean your teeth. Dentures should be rinsed after eating, if possible, and brushed with a denture brush at least once a day to remove plaque and stains. Mild detergent or toothpaste that is not abrasive can be used. Dentures can be soaked overnight in a chemical solution that often comes in a tablet form and is placed in the water with the denture (Efferdent, Polident). When you see your dental hygienist for your check up appointment, ask if your denture can be cleaned ultrasonically while you are there.

If you have some natural teeth, you need to brush and floss thoroughly to remove bacteria and plaque. Remember to pay special attention to the teeth that support your partial dentures. Continue with regular check-up appointments with your dentist and dental hygienist. If you wear full dentures, visit the dental office once a year for a complete soft tissue examination. Remember that it is unlikely that your doctor will do this at your physical exams. Your gums under the dentures need cleaning and stimulation so wiping them with a soft wet cloth or using a gentle brush will help to keep the hidden tissue healthy.

Sometimes the fit of a denture can change if you gain or lose weight or if the metal clasps get bent. Do not wait too long before seeking an adjustment or a denture reline. Poorly fitting dentures can cause difficulty chewing and swallowing, stomach and digestion problems, tissue sores, difficulty speaking, cracked corners of the mouth and overall discomfort.

Dentures that are well made and fit properly will add to your quality of life by giving you a natural looking smile while allowing you to eat a healthy diet.
