Tooth Whitening

Did you ever wonder how tooth whitening works? Most of the products use a type of peroxide that not only removes stains but enters the enamel to bleach out colour. By doing this, the enamel will lighten without taking away the surface of the tooth.

Toothpaste

Toothpastes work with mild abrasives to remove surface stains. This makes your smile brighter and appear whiter. Brushing with whitening toothpaste will not "bleach" your teeth. Although they do not whiten your teeth much, they are good toothpastes to use along with whitening treatments. Always look for your dental hygiene or dental association's seal of approval when buying toothpaste.

Whitening Strips

These strips are easy to apply and wear and are cheaper than other kits. They are a clear tape that is coated with peroxide that you place on your front teeth to wear during the day. You can buy these at many drug stores or from your dental office. Many people find some whitening occurs after a few weeks but some people develop tooth sensitivity that lasts for awhile. The strips do not always fit the contour of the teeth and may not cover all areas.

Brush on Whitening

Peroxide based whitening gels that you “paint” on your teeth with a small brush. It is cheaper than many whitening treatments but not easy to use and does not taste very nice. The result is not as good as other methods and if not applied well, the teeth will not be evenly lightened.

Gel Kits

This is a home kit that uses concentrated gel and a fitted tray that you wear on your teeth. It can be purchased over the counter. This gel method usually offers good, long lasting results. Although cheaper than office whitening, you must find a kit that allows you the best fit or you will not be happy with the result. The teeth can become sensitive with this method and if the tray does not fit well, the gums can also become very sore.

Office Whitening

A gel is placed on your teeth by your dentist or hygienist and either heat, light or laser (or any combination) is applied to the gel to speed up the process. This is quick (1/2 – 1 hour), effective, dramatic and quite expensive. The good thing is that it is done in 1 or 2 appointments. But, beware of sensitive teeth and gums and the cost.

Dentally supervised gel treatment

This is one of the best and most popular ways to whiten your teeth. This way you are guided by a dental professional. The carbamide peroxide that is used is more effective and the custom trays fit the best. This is a good way to get the results you want with limited gum sensitivity. Ask your dental hygienist about this method.
